In 1982, Sony gave us “perfect sound every time,” along with the attitude that “all CD players sound the same because digital is digital.” This has been refuted and differences in quality between CD players have been accepted as fact. Next came separate transport and DAC combos under the premise of “all S/PDIF digital audio cables sound the same”… until that too was disproved. Now the border has shifted again. Is digital audio really just 1s and 0s? We don’t believe that, and once you’ve had the chance to hear the Forest USB, you won’t believe it either.

SINGLE WIRE CONDUCTORS MADE OF PERFECT SURFACE SILVER (PSS)
Solid conductors prevent the electrical and magnetic mutual influence of the individual strands. The high degree of purity of Perfect-Surface Silver minimizes the distortion caused by the grain boundaries existing in each metal conductor, almost completely eliminating harshness in the sound and greatly improving transparency compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N and other coppers.
THREE-LAYER CARBON-BASED NOISE DISSIPATION SYSTEM (NDS).
Achieving 100 percent shielding is easy. To prevent “trapped” radio frequency (RF) interference from affecting the device’s ground reference, the AQ Noise Dissipation System (NDS) is required. Conventional shielding absorbs noise/RF energy and then dissipates it to component ground; this modifies and distorts the critical ground reference area, which in turn distorts the signal. The NDS “shields the shield” by absorbing and reflecting most of the noise/RF energy before it reaches the ground-connected layer.
DIELECTRIC BIAS SYSTEM WITH HIGH FREQUENCY NOISE TRAP
The insulation between two or more conductors is a dielectric whose properties affect the integrity of the signal. If the dielectric is not biased, the dielectric’s involvement (absorption and nonlinear release of energy) causes different time delays (phase shift) for different frequencies and energy levels, which is a major problem for very time-critical multi-octave audio. The inclusion of an RF trap (originally developed for the AudioQuest Niagara Series power products) ensures that no high frequency noise from the DBS field elements enters the signal conductors. (DBS, US Patent Numbers 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1)
HARD CELL FOAM INSULATION
Hard-cell foam (HCF) maintains the critical conductor geometry. Any solid material adjacent to a conductor becomes part of an incomplete electrical network. Cable insulation and circuit board material absorb energy. Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Hard cell foam insulation behaves similarly to the PE foam used in cheaper Bridges & Falls cables and contains nitrogen injections that create air pockets. Because nitrogen (like air) does not absorb energy and therefore does not release energy from or into the conductor, distortion is reduced. Additionally, the rigidity of the material ensures that the cable conductors do not change position relative to each other over the entire cable length, creating a stable impedance character and further reducing distortion.
DIRECTIONAL CONDUCTORS REDUCE RF NOISE

SOLID CONDUCTORS WITH 10% SILVER CONTENT
Solid conductors prevent distortion caused by strand interaction and reduce jitter. Solid, silver-plated conductors are ideal for high-frequency digital audio and video applications. During transmission, these high-frequency signals move almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor. Since this is made of high purity silver, the reproduction is very close to that of a solid silver cable, while the price is closer to that of a solid copper cable. This is a surprisingly cost-effective way to produce very high quality digital cables.

Audio Quest Rocket 88

The Rocket 88 features AudioQuest’s patented Dielectric-Bias System (DBS) and replaces Long-Grain Copper with solid Perfect-Surface Copper+. The DBS ensures a reduced noise floor so you can hear deeper into the nuances of your favorite music. At the same time, the addition of more PSC+ offers smoother, more relaxed and more natural tones and textures.

SINGLE WIRE CONDUCTORS MADE OF PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER+ (PSC+)
Solid conductors prevent the electrical and magnetic mutual influence of the individual strands. PSC+ Solid-Copper reduces distortion due to the presence of grain boundaries and enables maximum linear high-frequency noise dissipation.
DOUBLE STAR QUAD GEOMETRY
The relationship between the individual conductors defines the basic electrical properties of a cable (capacitance and inductance). Even when these variables are kept in a sensible balance, the sound is greatly affected due to the conductors’ particular geometric relationships to one another. The Star Quad geometry is far superior not only to conductors running in parallel, but also to the same conductors run as two twisted pairs.
CARBON-BASED NOISE AND CROSSTALK DISSIPATION SYSTEM
The negative conductors of this cable are insulated with partially conductive carbon-containing polyethylene. This remarkable material attenuates high-frequency interference so that it is not fed back into the amplifier. This provides the same sonic benefit as reducing fluctuations and improving spatiality as reducing RF interference in an audio circuit. An additional carbon layer dampens the mutual influence of positive and negative conductors, and the three-layer carbon-based NDS system as an outer layer additionally absorbs interference from outside.
POLYETHYLENE FOAM INSULATION (FOR ALL PLUS CONDUCTORS)
Any solid material adjacent to a conductor becomes part of an incomplete electrical network. Cable insulation and circuit board material absorb energy. Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortions. However, in the Rocket 33, air-filled polyethylene foam insulation is used for both conductors. Because air absorbs almost no energy and polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile, PE foam with its high air content causes significantly fewer blurring effects than other materials.

While HDMI is more commonly used than Toslink to connect a DVD player to an AV receiver, Toslink connections are common for cable receivers, TVs, subwoofers and all sorts of other products. The 3.5mm miniplug, also somewhat incorrectly referred to as mini-Toslink, can now be found virtually everywhere… from the 3.5mm headphone jack on a Mac laptop to inputs on some of the highest-end portable devices.

For these reasons, we at AudioQuest have improved and renewed our line of high performance OptiLink cables. All models and lengths are now available in Toslink to Toslink and Toslink to 3.5mm miniplug versions.
