Perfect fusion of classic analogue with pioneering digital technologies

Essential assemblies have been newly developed. The result: an exceptional playback quality that has redefined the standard for direct-drive turntables and amazed the experts. The SL-1200GR also benefits from the pioneering technology. Individual components of the SL-1200G were newly developed for the SL-1200GR. Such as the coreless direct drive motor and the precise motor control technology. It prevents the disruptive cogging torque that occurs as a result of irregularities in the rotary movement. Also new are the low-vibration, torsion-resistant turntable and the high-precision tonearm. The playback quality of the SL-1200GR clearly exceeds the usual standard in its class. Audio enthusiasts will rediscover the warm and rich sound of analog vinyl records.

Coreless direct drive motor for high speed stability

Back in 1970, Technics launched the world’s first direct drive turntable. A real revolution in the HiFi world. In contrast to belt and friction wheel drives, the motor in direct-drive systems rotates at low speeds and drives the turntable directly. Neither engine vibrations nor friction losses within transmission mechanisms disturb the power transmission. Signal-to-noise ratios remain exemplary low. Since there are no moving parts to maintain, the direct drive is also very durable. In 2016, experts took notice again. Technics surprised with a coreless direct drive motor that used a very flat twin rotor on either side of the stator coils. Since the stator coils now do without an iron core, the cogging torque that occurs due to magnetic interactions can be prevented. The “cogging” that is common with direct-drive turntables is now a thing of the past. The new motor was developed for the SL-1200G and caused a sensation on the HiFi market. The technology was also the inspiration for the SL-1200GR. It uses a less complex single-rotor coreless direct-drive motor that is also cogg-free.

High-precision motor control for maximum speed stability
The speed control monitors the consistency of the rotation and adjusts it if necessary. The latest control technologies are used, which are also used in Panasonic Blu-ray players and the SL-1200G. Sine waveforms stored in ROM drive the constant speed motor. This results in a smoother rotation than a simple external coil sine wave generator used in the SL-1200MK5. In addition, the electronic circuitry has been further optimized so that the newly developed engine of the SL-1200GR works under perfect conditions. Starting torque reaches 2.2 kg-cm (0.22Nm) with just a single rotor. The start-up time of 0.7s (up to 33 1/3 rpm) is therefore identical to that of the SL-1200G.

The goal: rigidity and high vibration damping

The platter offers high mechanical rigidity combined with high vibration damping. Vibration-dampening rubber covers the entire back of the die-cast aluminum platter. Therefore, no resonances propagate through the platter. The sound of the records remains absolutely pure. The shape of the aluminum plate casting was optimized using a simulation. The inertial mass has been increased and vibration reduced. At 2.5kg (including the rubber pad), the platter of the SL-1200GR is 0.8kg heavier than that of the SL-1200MK5. The cast aluminum plate also has reinforcing ribs on the back to increase rigidity. Since the contact area between the aluminum pad and the vibration-damping rubber layer has been increased, the damping characteristics are more than double those of the SL-1200MK5.

Highly sensitive tonearm

The tonearm scans the grooves of the record with ultimate precision. The statically balanced S-shaped tonearm is used, as is traditionally used in Technics turntables. The tonearm tube consists of a light and stiff aluminum profile. The tonearm bearing is cardanic. Similar to the SL-1200G, the bearing legs consist of high-precision milled parts. The needle bearings for the bearing axles are of the highest precision. Thanks to the highest manufacturing precision, which is only possible through the skill of experienced special forces, and fine adjustment by experienced specialists, a sensitivity of less than 5 mg is achieved. The scanning process of the record runs with extreme sensitivity. In addition to the main counterweight, an auxiliary weight is included in the scope of delivery for a large selection of pickup systems. So a generous selection of pick-up systems is possible depending on the music style. (Applicable cartridge weight using the additional counterweight: 10 – 16.4g, headshell not included).

High-quality connections guarantee excellent sound and premium optics

The SL-1200GR features gold-plated phono jacks and a gold-plated ground terminal. The phono connection cable can be selected according to audiophile preferences. The metal shielding housing around the connection sockets blocks external interference from the sensitive signals.

Chassis with high rigidity and vibration-absorbing silicone damping feet for pure sound and good protection against shocks

The die-cast aluminum chassis is firmly connected to the lower shell made of BMC (Bulk Molding Compound). This two-layer housing construction ensures high rigidity. As with the SL-1200G, special silicone rubber is used for the damping feet that support the chassis. It causes high vibration damping and good long-term durability. Vibrations in the horizontal direction are absorbed by a small-cell polymer cylindrical guide ring. This method, which originated in the SL-1200G, has been specially adapted to the SL-1200GR. The height of the damping feet is adjusted using threaded bolts. This avoids the vibrations that occur when the turntable is placed on a shelf, for example. A perfect horizontal alignment of the platter also ensures maximum mechanical rotational stability without disturbing imbalances.
