Grado’s brand new Signature S950 headphones: Premium sound in a handcrafted Brazilian walnut wood case!

Grado Labs, the world-renowned designer and manufacturer of award-winning headphones, presents its latest open-back headphone, the Signature S950. Following the success of the recently released HP100 SE, the Signature S950 is the second headphone in the new Signature series. True to Grado’s long-standing tradition of using wood for its headphone housings, this model marks the first use of Brazilian walnut. Grado believes that different woods possess distinct sonic characteristics, giving this headphone a unique sonic signature that sets it apart from the more analytical, milled aluminum HP100 SE.

NEW driver design

The Signature S950 uses a version of the new Grado 52mm S-driver, originally developed for the award-winning Signature HP100 SE. In developing this new 52mm driver, Grado aimed to create a loudspeaker that delivers exceptional high-frequency detail, a balanced midrange, and powerful bass with minimal distortion, thus ensuring a musically and harmonically precise sound.

To achieve this, a paper composite diaphragm was chosen in combination with a high-flux magnet circuit made of rare-earth alloys. The driver also features a lightweight, copper-clad aluminum voice coil. Together, the advanced magnet circuit and voice coil improve dynamics and impulse response, resulting in a refined sense of space, a wide soundstage, rich detail, and precise imaging.

While the award-winning Signature HP100 SE has been praised by sound engineers and listeners worldwide for its detail, openness, and accurate reproduction of the original recording, the Signature S950 offers a more neutral and balanced sound with a wide, room-filling musical presentation. This presentation allows the listener a relaxed and personal connection to the music’s message.

Headband

The Signature S950 uses the new headband first introduced on the Signature HP100 SE. Designed for extended listening sessions, the improved headband offers 50% more padding than previous Grado models. It features a stainless steel band and height-adjustable arms for a customized fit, reducing listening fatigue.

Grado Labs manufactures the engraved joints from an aluminum alloy, while the stainless steel height adjustment rod provides additional stability at the connection point. The height adjustment rod is designed to remain in place even if the zinc alloy end caps shift, and also limits the case rotation to 105 degrees to minimize wear.

Detachable cables

The Grado Signature series will continue to feature detachable cables. These new cables, first introduced with the Signature HP100 SE, are a welcome addition to Grado headphones. The Signature S950 headphones come standard with the Grado Signature Gold cable, which is 1.8 meters long and features a 6.35 mm jack. All new Grado cables have been redesigned and now feature a softer, more durable braid and improved insulation, increasing flexibility while reducing weight.

The cable connects to the headphone housings via a 4-pin balanced mini-XLR connector. In the future, detachable Grado cables with various connection options will be available: a 4-pin balanced XLR connector and a 4.4 mm jack plug. Variable cable lengths will also be offered. Thanks to the detachable cables, users can optimally adapt their headphones to their audio source and personal preferences.
